The Kenya Project FAQs
Where are The Kenya Project homes built?
The homes are built in a small village on Mfangano Island in Kenya where women have organized themselves into several role-oriented groups; they take pride in both their group and individual accomplishments and their roles in the community.
How much does it cost Pink Tool Belts to build one home in Kenya?
It costs approximately $4,500 to build a Kenya Project home.
How many homes have been build so far? How often are they built?
During the past three years, Pink Tool Belts (thanks to your purchases) has built a total of six homes on Mfangano Island – two homes each year. It is our goal to increase product sales so we can increase the number of homes built each year.
How are the recipients of the new homes selected?
The board of the Community Based Organization (CBO) Lakeside Lampstand is an organization that provides food, medicine, and other necessities to community members. As a group that is accustomed to identifying the needs within the village, they make a recommendation to Pink Tool Belts, who makes the final approval.
The recipients are always widowed women with children; however, the children aren't always the woman’s birth children. High rates of AIDS and malaria have left this area with many orphaned children, but there are no orphanages to care for them.
What materials are used to construct the homes?
The homes are constructed with concrete floors, brick and mortar walls, and metal roofs. While the new homes are basic and small compared to a home the majority of us are accustomed too, they provide safety, shelter, and refuge for women and their children who had previously lived outdoors or in extremely unsafe circumstances.
Who physically builds the homes?
Terri and her daughter experienced the joy of building the first home in 2007. To reduce travel expenses, the projects are now managed and overseen by the Community Based Organization (CBO) Lakeside Lampstand, which hires local men to construct the homes.
